The Phelps Lady Hornets survived a late push from the East Ridge Lady Hornets to earn a hard-fought 63–60 win in the opening game of last night’s girls’ basketball doubleheader at East Ridge.
Phelps used its size and experience to control the boards early, setting the tone in the first quarter. East Ridge countered behind the play of sophomore standout Kourtlee Keene, who helped keep the game close. The teams finished the opening period tied at 12–12.
In the second quarter, Phelps gained momentum behind a strong offensive showing from Kaylyn Slone, who scored 13 of her 23 points in the first half. Her scoring surge helped the Lady Hornets build a 27–22 lead heading into halftime.
The second half belonged to Phelps star Caleigh McCoy. McCoy heated up from the perimeter, scoring 13 points after the break and finishing with a game-high 21 points. She connected on five three-pointers to keep Phelps in front despite continued pressure from East Ridge.
East Ridge made one final run in the fourth quarter, sparked by a three-point basket from Kourtlee Keene, who finished with 23 points. Olivia Stanley added three three-pointers to help trim the deficit to just three points in the closing seconds. However, the Lady Hornets were unable to get a final shot off before time expired.
Phelps held on to secure the 63–60 victory in an exciting contest that featured multiple lead changes and strong individual performances from both teams. The Surplus Products Player of the Game Award goes to Kaylyn Slone fir her outstanding offensive performance with 23 points. Below is the top 3 scorers for each team :
