The Phelps Hornets pulled out a dramatic 72–71 victory over the Betsy Layne Bobcats on Tuesday night, surviving a late surge and sealing one of the most thrilling finishes of the young season.
Phelps was led by a dominant performance from Tyler Weddington, who poured in 28 points and hauled down 18 rebounds, while adding an assist, two blocks, and two steals. Weddington anchored the Hornets throughout the night and delivered in several crucial moments.
Knox Wallace added 11 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals, providing steady guard play and crucial decision-making late in the contest.
Ethan Fields contributed 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 1 steal, offering strong two-way play.
The Hornets also benefited from balanced production across the lineup:

In the end, Phelps’ resilience — anchored by Weddington’s dominance inside and steady guard play — proved just enough to secure the 72–71 victory.
The Hornets, 1-0 on the season, will be back in action Saturday in the DJ Begley Classic at Pike Central. With the loss Betsy Layne falls to 0-1 on the season and will play host to Magoffin County on Thursday and can be seen on WPRG-TV5.
