Weddington Explodes for 41 as Phelps Outlasts Magoffin County, 88–82

A monster performance from Tyler Weddington and a composed finish down the stretch lifted Phelps to an 88–82 victory over Magoffin County on Monday night.

The game was tight from the opening tip, with Magoffin County edging Phelps 16–15 after one quarter. Phelps answered in the second, outscoring the Hornets 19–17 to take a narrow 34–33 lead into halftime.

Momentum shifted coming out of the locker room. Phelps controlled the third quarter behind efficient interior scoring and strong ball movement, building a six-point cushion at 57–51 heading into the final period. Magoffin County continued to battle in the fourth, matching Phelps basket for basket, but could not overcome Weddington’s scoring burst and Phelps’ ability to close possessions at the free-throw line.

Weddington delivered one of the most complete performances of the season, finishing with 41 points on 16-of-24 shooting, including 14-of-18 from two-point range. He added 12 rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and two blocks, all while committing zero turnovers. Time and again, he broke down the defense, either finishing strong at the rim or finding open teammates.

Phelps’ supporting cast played a key role as well. Ethan Fields added 24 points, and John Sorrin chipped in 14, helping the Hornets shoot 51 percent from the field as a team. Phelps assisted on 26 of its 34 made baskets and turned the ball over just five times.

Magoffin County was led by a balanced scoring attack. Maceln Allen finished with 21 points, Parker Bowling scored 19, and Walker Russell added 18 as the Hornets stayed within striking distance all night. Despite scoring 31 points in the fourth quarter, Magoffin County struggled to contain Phelps inside and could not get the late stops it needed.

With the win, Phelps closed the calendar year with momentum, fueled by efficient offense, disciplined defense, and a standout individual effort that will be remembered long after the final buzzer. Below is the scoring recap for each team
